Lee Anderson
Lee was born in Seattle, Washington in the family home on 14th and Dravus, on July 1, 1922 to Luther and Rae (Davison) Anderson along with his twin brother, Lou. He attended school at the Interbay School. At the age of 17 he went to work for the United States Coast Guard Geodetic Survey Department surveying locations for the lighthouses in Alaska to help support his mother. In 1943 he attained his seaman’s papers and sailed out of San Francisco on the Liberty Ships as a carpenter.
He later set off to see the world going from the West coast to the East coast to catch ships that were bound for places he wanted to see. On June 10, 1946 he married Kathryn Joyce Hadley, from this union the had two children, Gerald Lee Anderson born in 1947 and Cynthia Elaine Anderson born in 1951. This was the end of his sailing around the world. He drove cab in Seattle until 1953 when he became a "list" person for ILWU Local 19, and commercial fishing in Alaska with his brother-in-law, Walt Mezich during the summers and working on the waterfront during the winters until 1957 when he received his "A" book.
Throughout his career as a Longshoreman he held many offices such as on the LRC, Executive Board, he was Trustee and Night Business Agent until he retired on July 1, 1983. He was a dedicated Union man, lived and breathed for the Waterfront. After retirement they traveled around the United States and Canada in their motor home and became "snowbirds," and spent time down in California at "the Fountain of Youth" during the winters. He knew every highway in every state.
In later years he became a caregiver for his wife who developed Dementia until she passed in 2005. Lee enjoyed life and everything he did he took seriously, He loved the water and everything about it from sailing to longshoring to fishing to building his summer home on Whidbey Island overlooking Puget Sound.
Lee died January 25, 2009 of melanoma leaving his
children, Gerald and Cyndi; three grandchildren, John Hoblet Jr, Jeremy Hoblet and Tami Norrod. At the time of his death he had one great grandchild,
Jaiden Lee Hoblet, All of his grandchildren and great grandchild have his and his wife’s middle name.
He lives on.
