Jake was born in Coyoacan Mexico and came to live in San Francisco as a child. His father Victor immigrated from Russia and was a world famous artist, Jake attended George Washington High School and San Francisco City College before transferring to California College of Arts And Crafts in Oakland. Jake became a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division after graduation from high school. 

After completion of college Jake worked as a longshoreman, first in Oakland where he became an ILWU member on October 1, 1963. In the 1970's Jake transferred to Local 19 in Seattle. Jake was an active member of the ILWU. Jake's other career was as an artist and he continued to paint until he suffered his final stroke.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Victor and Lydia Arnautoff; his brother Vas; and his first wife Lofti, He is survived by his wife 35 years, Lenore, of Seattle; his brother Mike of Ohio; son, Charles of Eureka, stepson, Phillip of Seattle; nephews, Peter of Sebastopol, Steve of Israel and Andrew of Yreka; niece, Toni of Ohio and Marya of Israel; and many grandnieces, nephews and friends, A memorial was held in Seattle on February 15,2007
