Norman Hansen
1930 - 2024
Norm Hansen (93) of Seattle, Washington passed away peacefully on January 3rd, 2024, from complications of a stroke he had at home two weeks prior.
Norm was born to Enevold (Ed) Hansen and Lillian Murphy Hansen in Seattle on July 26,1930. He attended Lake Washington High School in Kirkland where he lettered in football and tennis.
His long maritime career, spanning over six decades, began after high school when he went to work for the Alaska Steamship Co. From there he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, trained in San Diego and served as a Radioman aboard the USS Cimarron (AO-22) throughout the Korean War.
After the war, he went to work for the Pacific Maritime Association where he spent the rest of his career. Remarkably, he retired well into his 80s as a "Supercargo" which is a title dating back to cargo shipping in the Age of Sail.
Norm is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carolyn Hansen, and three children, Kevin Hansen (Kimberlee) of Carnation, Colin Hansen (Terri) of Seattle and Sonja Stewart of Lynnwood. He is also survived by his six grandchildren - Kyle, Kaylee, Kallen and Kamren Hansen; Ashley (Jeremy) Dingeman and Riley Stewart; two great grandchildren (Aurora and Zoey Dingeman); as well as his four nieces (Casey, Paige, Erinn and Kelli).
Norm was passionate about work which took him to all the seaports in Washington State. When he wasn't away at work, he was a somewhat reluctant participant in social gatherings arranged by Carolyn (winning a number of best costume awards) at Sand Point Country Club. He enjoyed traveling to Mexico and Eagle Crest in Oregon along with "firing-up" his 1971 Cougar convertible, driving it around the neighborhood and picking up a few trophies at the local car show.
