John M. Munson
1982 - 2022
Seattle, Washington - John Morgan Munson was born on January 17, 1982 and from the outset brought his own special blend of joy, humor, and energy to the family. His vibrant spirit and quest to do things with his hands made him a natural at fishing, drumming, disc golf, crocheting, guitar, art, and so much more. He tied flies like an artist, and could coax a fish to shore before his older brother and brother-in-law even had their lines wet. He loved to spend time outdoors hiking, camping, and especially shredding the slopes on his snowboard. He even spent a few seasons working at Mount Baker Ski Area running the lifts or cooking in the lodge so he could spend more time on the mountain.
After construction training at Mt. Vernon High School and a life around builders and fixers, he spent several years working construction and always found time to help friends replace a roof or fix a car. In 2001 he joined his dad and uncle as a longshoreman for the ILWU in Seattle. The variety of work, the camaraderie of the brotherhood, and opportunity to learn new skills kept him excited to show up each day and proud of his efforts on the waterfront, especially his recent accomplishment of crane operator.
His death on October 21 is a huge loss for his much loved family and large extended family. He is survived by his parents, Skip Munson & Yerda Yearsley (Jim); brother Josh (Sarah); sisters Larissa (Mark), Sara (Aron), Elsa (Steve), and Jennifer; nephews Levi, Bjorn, Eliot, Kai, and Marcelino, and niece Lavender. We will be eating strawberry shortcake and broccoli, and listening to Bob Marley, in his honor forever. His generous spirit lives on in each of us.
