Joe WALDEAN Of Seattle, passed away peacefully April 25, 2004, in his home at his wish after a long fight with cancer. Joe was born February 16, 1920 in Kappel, Denmark, he was eight of 11 brothers and sisters.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Margrethe; daughter, Karen and Arne; son, Jim and wife Valerie; grandchildren, Inga Margrethe, Brittany Jo and Brandon.

He also leaves behind two sisters, Helene and Wanda and nieces and nephews in Denmark and Norway. He fought in the Finland-Russo War. In 1940, at the beginning of WWII, he was enlisted in the Danish Royal Police Academy.

By the end of 1942 he was in the Danish Underground-Resistance where he and his partners were arrested and sent to Buchenwald until 1945 when Denmark was liberated. After the war he sailed and trained on the Christian Radrich, and after his completion on board, he became an engineer.

He sailed for the Norwegian Merchant Marines for 18 years before settling in Seattle with his family. He was employed by I.L.W.U. Local 19 as a longshoreman until his retirement in 1989.

He had a great love for the ocean and being onboard his own boat. Commercial salmon fishing became his favorite pastime, fishing out of Neah Bay from 1959 until 1995.

He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. A Celebration of his Life will be held at Joe Waldean's Home, Saturday, May 8, 2004 from 2 to 4 p.m. Remembrances may be made to Group Health Hospice or to the charity of your choice.
