Welcome to the Unofficial ILWU Local 19 Website

This platform was created to inform ILWU members and the broader community about the inner workings of the union and the labor movement in general, empowering individuals with the knowledge needed to become a better union member and to help educate others. After all, knowledge is the foundation of power.

Here, you’ll find a rich history of ILWU Local 19 and ILWU Auxiliary 3, both established during the pivotal years of 1937 and 1934, respectively. The site serves as a tribute to the union’s legacy, offering a window into its significant role in labor movements.

Originally launched in 1999 by Curt Cunningham, a retired ILWU member, this site reflects his dedication to ensuring ILWU members have access to vital information, as outlined in ILWU Union Principle #1. Curt invested countless hours over the years to make this resource what it is today.

Please note that while this website honors the spirit of the ILWU’s rank-and-file activism, it operates independently of the ILWU and holds no official affiliation. Unfortunately, I cannot answer inquiries regarding these entities directly.

Explore this site to dive deeper into the enduring legacy of the ILWU and its commitment to collective action!

What is a Longshoreman ?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines a Longshoreman as; "(Long-shore-man) n. a dock worker who loads and unloads ships."

Entreaty

Keep us O God, from pettiness. Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking. May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face without self pity and prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment and always be generous.

Teach us to put into action our better impulses straightforward and unafraid. Let us take time for all things that make us grow calm, serene and gentle. Grant that we may realize it is the little things of life that create differences: that in the big things in life we are as one, and may we strive to touch the great common heart of us all.

And, Oh Lord, God, Let us not Forget to be Kind.
